Chicago police officer has K9 partner back after successful surgery at VMC, January 19, 2015

Chicago Police Officer Chad Rezny, member of the Village of Alsip Police Department, a unit in a south-side suburb of Chicago, made a six-hour drive to The Ohio State Veterinary Medical Center with his partner Eddie, who was diagnosed with hip displasia and needed surgery.

He's a 7-year-old Malinois German Shepherd and K9 police dog who has worked alongside officer Rezny for seven years now. After visiting University of Illinois College of Veterinary Medicine, officer Rezny was referred to Ohio State for their expertise in orthopedic surgery.

Dr. Jonathan Dyce, an associate professor in the Department of Clinical Sciences, performed a successful total hip replacement surgery on Eddie on Jan. 8, one day after his arrival. The surgery will extend Eddie’s service life and “enable me to do my job better,” said officer Rezny.

Dr. Dyce has been with the Veterinary Medical Center at the college for over 16 years, and is a renowned orthopedic surgeon who has performed hundreds of surgeries similar to Eddie’s. Thanks to Dyce and his surgical team, Eddie will be back in the field within eight to 12 weeks.

Eddie serves as a dual-purpose dog and is known as an elite athlete with skills in narcotics detection, article search, building and area search, suspect apprehension and handler protection. Officer Rezny, who has been with the Alsip police force for 17 years, notes numerous occasions when Eddie has saved his life by being his first-line of defense during armed robberies and apprehensions.

Officer Rezny is looking forward to having his partner back, and says he is thankful for the thorough, professional and kind environment offered by the staff at Ohio State’s Veterinary Medical Center. Eddie's surgery was made possible in part by donations from grateful clients of Dyce's orthopedic service, and their generosity is sincerely appreciated.
