New Prosthesis for Pippy the Pig, July 26, 2013
On June 5, 2013, Dr. Dominic Marino of Long Island Veterinary Specialists contacted BioMedtrix regarding an unusual patient whose owners were considering emergency total hip replacement (THR) surgery for their pet.
The patient, named Pippy, is a 25 pound, six-month-old, mini Vietnamese pet "teacup" pig. After a rough landing from jumping off a bed, she immediately started limping, holding her leg up and was in obvious pain. Her family's local veterinarian referred Pippy to Long Island Veterinary Specialists in Plainview, NY, where radiographs showed a severe dislocation of the hip joint. Rather than femoral head ostectomy, Pippy’s owners opted for THR, which is expected to return her to normal activity with no pain following recovery.
Having performed over 1000 THR procedures on dogs and cats, Dr. Marino was confident a BioMedtrix THR prosthesis would be a good fit. In less than 24 hours post-op, Pippy was weight bearing on the treated limb and pigging out on pellets and greens while recovering at LIVS.
