“Maverick is a 1.5 year old neutered male domestic shorthair cat who presented for a fracture of the left tibia. On 02/20/21 Maverick was sitting on a night stand and fell when attempting to get off catching his leg on a drawer during his decent. He instantly began to hiss, act painful, and was non-weight bearing when he landed.
Radiographs were taken revealing a minimally displaced oblique fracture of the distal tibia. Options for repair were discusses and external coaptation was chosen. That evening Maverick became very agitated, tried to jump off a couch, and the splint slipped from it original location. This further agitated Maverick who began to run throughout the house. When he was caught, follow-up radiographs were taken revealing increased displacement of the fracture, so referral for orthopedic surgery or amputation were discussed as options. Radiographs upon referral revealed a complete oblique craniolaterally displaced mid diaphyseal left tibial and fibular fracture. This was stabilized using an interlocking nail (Modified 3 x 118) placed in a 2×2 fashion via a minimally invasive approach.
Maverick was reassessed at 3 and 6 weeks postoperatively. At 3 weeks postoperatively healing was progressing well and an increase in activity levels was advised. At 6 weeks postoperatively clinical union had been achieved. No lameness was evident during gait assessment and there was a normal range of motion of all joints of the left hind limb. Maverick was released to normal activity levels at this time and has returned to his previous lifestyle with no subsequent complications. “
